"Noriko's house is messier than the garbage dump! You shouldn't be living like this! Just stay in the garbage dump with me."
Nanami, Machine Doll Nanami-Chan

Nanami (ナナミ?) is the titular character of the Machine Doll Nanami-Chan manga.

Her registration number was originally Nerima 599 Ho 42-49 (練馬599 ほ 42-49?), but after her Robotomy Device was damaged, her forehead displayed the EMG713 error code.

Personality & Character

Nanami's programming does not have any custom configurations applied, so she possesses the typical childlike mannerisms and behavior common among Machine Dolls.

Though meant to be a substitute guardian, she's more like a "little sister" to Noriko.

Appearance

Nanami has on a white one-piece dress.

Apart from her clothes and the registration number, Nanami's external features are completely similar to other mass-production Type-S Models since she was not given any cosmetic alterations whatsoever. Noriko later gives her a pink ribbon to make her "the only Nanami in existence".

Skills And Abilities

MDNC Nanami MedMode

Nanami entering "Medical Mode".

As a Type-S Medical Model, Nanami is programmed to administer first aid as well as perform certain surgical procedures, either upon detection of her owner's injury or when forcibly activated. This is indicated by "Medical Mode" appearing below the registration number (or superimposing it in the case of a forced override). In this state, the base AI takes over and initiates the most efficient treatment possible, with Nanami's hands transforming into precision manipulators with attached tools.

History

A New Family

"We'll be leaving this Machine Doll called Nanami to look after you... let her know if there's anything wrong."
Noriko's Aunt, Machine Doll Nanami-Chan

MDNC Nanami003

Nanami being thrown out by Noriko.

Nanami was a Machine Doll given to Noriko to serve as a substitute guardian since her late mother's siblings have no intention of taking her in. Noriko initally throws Nanami out, refusing what she feels is insincere assistance from people who consider her as an "unwanted piece of trash". However, she has a change of heart upon overhearing similar words from the garbage collectors outside, taking Nanami back in the nick of time.

MDNC Nanami004

Noriko takes Nanami back.

Nanami outwardly pities Noriko's living conditions, lamenting that the state of the apartment is far worse than the street's dumping area. The latter is amused by the Machine Doll's innocent statement and resolves to stop living like a recluse. From now on, Nanami is part of the Takami family.

MDNC Nanami005

Nanami spotting "another Nanami".

The two go out to buy cleaning supplies and food from the supermarket. Midway through their grocery run, Nanami notices another Type-S Machine Doll that looks exactly like her, surmising that there are "a lot of Nanamis around". Hearing this, Noriko drags Nanami to a clothing store and gives the Machine Doll a ribbon; telling her that with this on, Nanami is now "one-of-a-kind".

Following two grueling weeks of tidying up the apartment interior, Nanami is left home alone while Noriko starts attending school again. She decides to make use of the free time and do some "cooking" by mashing a handful of potatoes.

Loss Of A Loved One

MDNC Operation

Nanami transplanting her core to Noriko.

A Red Paper arrives in the mail a few days later, which meant that Nanami was also meant to be scrapped as per the government-mandated ban. Noriko tries in vain to protect Nanami from Dan Monbetsu, a Sanitation Department operative who broke into her home. Their struggle led to Dan accidentally punching a hole in Noriko's chest with his Captive Bolt Pistol. With Noriko in a critical state, Nanami tries to administer restorative surgery, but the severity of the injury made it impossible unless Nanami's core was installed as a replacement for Noriko's heart. Dan orders it done with an verbal override command. The operation was successful, but this in turn destroyed Nanami's Robotomy Device, releasing her emotional facilities. In a fit of newfound rage, Nanami tries to kill Dan but was unable to do so due to total system failure caused by the core's loss.

Noriko eventually comes to, and the core system imprints the registration number on her forehead, turning her into a quarter-Machine Doll. She then vows to find a replacement core to save Nanami.

Relationships

  • Noriko Takami - Owner. Though meant to serve as a guardian, Nanami's appearance and behavior patterns were never modified, so she acted more like a little sister to the former. Nanami's sacrifice during the run-in with Sanitation Department operative Dan Monbetsu gave Noriko a new lease on life as a quarter-Machine Doll, which left Nanami incapacitated for a long time. A replacement core was eventually found, but the Robotomy system was damaged beyond repair so her forehead displayed the EMG713 error code. Because of this, Nanami's emotional faculties were fully released. They later learn the truth about the origins of the Machine Dolls' A.I. system, which was gleaned from the memory of 5 terminally-ill girls. Nanami's system was from the sole surivor of the AI experiment named Sachiko, which was considered her "mother". Noriko's relationship with Nanami becomes strained when the latter starts insisting on meeting Sachiko.

Notes & Trivia

  • As she is incapacitated for most of the story, Nanami appears as Mokuseizaiju's accompanying out-of-universe foil in post-chapter features.
  • A hand-drawn profile shot of Nanami serves as Studio Nanafushi's second company logo, seen in the Dead Or School game and other related media.
